“Why not wine?” Because some people don’t drink, some firms have policies these days about drinking, and (increasingly in Japan) alcohol suffers from potential ambiguity in messaging. Coffee is unambiguously permitted and platonic, but too cheap to say This Is A Message.

Is weirdly expensive, sometimes weirdly-shaped fruit no longer a thing in Japan? I think David Friedman used it as an example in one of his econ books.
