My friendly neighborhood coffee shop in Japan now selling Blue Mountain coffee for $15 a bottle (for 500mL). “It’s great for that business associate you can’t buy wine for but wanted to let know that you’d totally buy them wine.” — owner’s pitch

Is weirdly expensive, sometimes weirdly-shaped fruit no longer a thing in Japan? I think David Friedman used it as an example in one of his econ books.

To unpack, alcohol carries romantic connotations now in Japan?
-
“Man gifts woman alcohol” has had connotations since fermentation was discovered. The recent change is that Salaryman A buying Salaryman B a bottle of alcohol may pattern match to that, even if the intent was “Wait we’re both salarymen this is just how the game is played.”

Off-Topic question for you: would it be terribly difficult for someone traveling to Japan to get around Tokyo knowing only a small amount of Japanese? I’m taking lessons, but worried I might not learn enough before I go

-
Nah, you'll be fine - Tokyo is very English-friendly.
