“Why not wine?” Because some people don’t drink, some firms have policies these days about drinking, and (increasingly in Japan) alcohol suffers from potential ambiguity in messaging. Coffee is unambiguously permitted and platonic, but too cheap to say This Is A Message.

I worked in coffee for a while (in Aus) and found the coffee culture in Japan very interesting. All the signifiers of quality are 30years out of date (I.e. blue mountain coffee - Jamaica is not really considered a specialty producer anymore, perhaps because price>>quality)
