Advice which seems obvious to me now but which wasn't and so maybe will help you: If you ever are talking to someone who is very good at some X relevant to you, and you hit it off, ask them "Who else should I talk to about X?"

Not subtle at all. If I point you at X, I'm telling you that you should talk to X. If I *introduce* to X, I'm telling X that they should talk to you.

I've only seen it be material when an introduction is an implicit vote of confidence in a person, most usually VCs.
