When people hear “Software eats the world” I think skeptical people hear “Those techies want to utterly dehumanize relationship-valuing services work” and software people think “We’re basically going to replace all instances of the following with a cronjob.”https://twitter.com/Joe8Bit/status/1156312965265707013 …

I saw a tweet asking why sometimes when you unsubscribe from an email list it says it can ‘take a few days’. Buckle up, as I have a RIDICULOUS story about this happening in The Enterprise™️...

Sceptical software people: "oh boy, that's gonna be a lot of terrible software we're gonna have to maintain, is this definitely worth it?"

A lot of this is really “software creates software-related busywork”. Before ETLs and email, there was probably one marketing team doing that job in one location; then it became 2 teams (mktg & IT) then 3 across 2 timezones (mktg, IT, cheap-IT), all because software.

You’re not wrong, but the cron job doesn’t seem to do anything to solve the two human problems described there: 1) Marketing team wants to manually reach out to 70% of unsubscribers 2) Software developers aren’t trusted to do anything that affects customer data

Why can't the cron job do the first one, and automatically process the 50 most common replies?
