I wonder whether Netflix and similar distribution platforms will result in more/faster crosscultural hits? They’ve got a far, far easier time than most content producers in getting content from Market A to Market B and built-in distribution, and they can translate down the tail.

The 40th most successful show on US broadcast television this year might not make it to Japan in next 10 years; the 40th most successful Netflix property costs like an engineer-month to port to Japan and so will probably arrive this year.

(Probably very little engineering time at the margin; I’m using engineer-month as a software company equivalent of “Basically the lowest number we can reason about.”)

In the status quo, to get property X from Market A to Market B you first need discovery, then bizdev time, then a (complicated and bespoke) rights negotiation, then localization, and all the rigamarole here means that B only sees the top of A’s distribution.

(This factor is one reason why Americans love anime and why Japanese people love American TV dramas; the high cost and gatekeepers keep each audience from seeing anything below the the top 5% of each others’ output.)

Yup. Same reason I used to think the UK had better programming than the US.

And it's why classical music is so good. Most of the stuff that wasn't got left behind, like most 60s garage bands.

There’s an opportunity here for a small country with lots of cultural output to package it up and release it internationally via a streaming service, or make their own and compensate their artists directly. Canada via NFB sort of does, but could do better.

This is similar to @tylercowen's (if I recall correctly) statement that one should prefer novels from other cultures as only the best ones clear the hurdle of being worth translating

What American TV dramas are especially popular in Japan?

Same with ramen in the US, I think

There are two kinds of ramen - the real thing, and the cheap plastic-wrapped instant stuff we all ate as broke college students. They've both got their places, and I almost made the latter for lunch today*, but most Americans only see the bad kind. (*Made grits instead.)

Unless you're referring to purely to theatrical releases, this is nowhere near true. If anything it's the opposite.

That’s not a bad system for people with limited time or inclination for reading/watching said content. I prefer the delay and/or limited title list to being inundated with schlock.
