What cheap but great product do you own that many of your peers spend a lot more money on?

Is there a Zillow-like for Japan, if I wanted to browse and feel dismayed?
-
There are a bunch of real-estate search engines; I spent most of my time on http://homes.co.jp and http://suumo.jp They are probably more Japanese-intensive than Zillow is English-intensive and probably a worse UX; sorry.

Is this because Tokyo housing is cheaper than SF? (not sure if you mean local peers or tech peers overall)
-
Yep. (Peers in Tokyo might be able to make the same observation regarding myself; with slightly different preferences regarding commute one could reasonably chop off ~40% of my housing costs. I feel optimizing for commute is one of best optimizations available though.)

Are you saying that you don’t spend much on housing, or that you prefer owning to renting?
-
I made the same choice as the op. I bought a really cheap house. It ain't pretty, but it is big, and enough house that I'll never need to move again.
