There are some times when you want to be a differentiated professional and sometimes when you want to be a boringly replaceable professional. Balancing the two requires some discretion.

If you say "I am a contract software developer" that probably answers 98% of questions they have *in a way that important stakeholders will agree, on review, met their standards* but if you say "Oh so I'm doing some experiments and I've got this thing" then they need to think.
