I have a cynical answer that I do not think is incorrect: A worldwide marketing campaign designed to turn them into a cultural moment (“Kids love reading again!”), followed by a multi-billion dollar movie franchise. See also Twilight.

They were organically popular in the UK before any of that kicked in. My understanding is first book didn’t do that well to begin with

Hmm. I think you're looking at consequences here rather than causes. I had never even heard the title before a friend lent me a copy because they had really liked it. I liked reading, but these translated books were on another level. 1st time I didn't go to sleep to finish a book

An ex read the series 10+ times. Most (though not all) bookish Eastern Europeans I meet under 30 really love the books. Maybe it's not their literary accomplishment but they did have a great effect on their own. Perhaps it rode a US+UK "marketing" culture wave exceptionally well

The first Harry Potter was acquired by Bloomsbury after being rejected by 8 publishers and was initially reviewed by a single Scottish newspaper. The sales came from word of mouth. Kids booksellers are not noted for lavish marketing; that came later

Think you’re wrong there. I grew up with the HP books and they were simply very, very entertaining reads with a broad base of appeal.

Twilight's endurance doesn't even compare to Harry Potter though? I barely hear about it. Where's the HP universe continues to resonate with grown up former readers and young people alike

The big marketing push came after initial success

they definitely were spread by word-of-mouth emanating out from the UK. the first people I knew of who'd read them in the late 90s in the US, found them via relatives in the UK

I worked in a book store when the 1st book became a hit. It was organically viral from the start, there was very minimal marketing for the first book. It blew up far beyond expectations, we ran out of copies for a month at one point
