(The Japanese pronunciation of Rakuten is “Ra-coo-ten” and the amount of time required to say “Raku” is the same as the amount required to say “ten.”)

Yeah, that bothered me too. Especially since it’s deliberately instructing people. But it’s pretty common. Kyocera (kee - oh Sara) and Uniqlo (you-knee-kloh) come to mind.

Sooooooo, I have a pronunciation guide for my name in my email signature. Even though my name is pronounced phonetically, people think it has to have an exotic pronunciation as it is not an English name. I thought of it as a better UX experience but now I'm not so sure.....

Definitely pronounce it RACK-uh-ten around the Americas offices, and I thought it was the same globally; but now you have me curious...

An Asian fusion place I saw once was called Máquè (with the tone marks too), means "sparrow" in Mandarin. On their website they said it's pronounced "May-KAY" (actually closer to Mah-chweh). It's like they didn't even want to bother trying to teach English speakers how to say it.

Always wondered why there's an "R" in the name, isn't something hard to pronounce for Japanese speakers?
-
I think they just pronounce it differently, it doesn’t feel “hard” for them. Also, as a French speaker I could also say that Americans can’t pronounce Rs
