There are many technologists of my acquaintance who do currently, or will in the future, have people or causes who would be materially harmed if their future earning power went away, and who are underinsured against this. I suggest fixing if this applies to you.

I meet a lot of geeks. At least one of them is no longer with us, and that became a pass-the-hat situation at a very, very trying time for their family. Term life insurance is, possibly, the crowning achievement of the financial industry. It's cheap, efficient, and lifechanging.

I described myself as an American citizen whose career is international in character and who as of the date of the insurance application was employed at the Tokyo office of a US company with no definitive end date.

I really hope someone does similar product innovation for private long-term disability insurance but am kinda sorta worried about the viability of doing it. Hopefully some startup proves me wrong.

Now that I think about it life insurance is actually a really cool invention. It lets you distribute risk/cost across an entire population instead of an individual. Success of the commons instead of tragedy of the commons
