Step 1: Exciting popular news video is proved to be deepfake. Step 2: Somebody else defends the deepfake by saying the depicted events probably did happen, though. Step 3: News stories full of "depictions" of events the news outlet thinks probably happened.

And it took them months to get to that point, including (pointedly) a two frame animated gif (“Faked memo / default layout in MS Word”) by a political blogger and typography enthusiast which threatened to be played on other networks next to CBC talking heads defending reporting.
