Ooo, that light blue "total deaths" line looks like it's already on the way down! And also: "~30k people died this year from something you probably do every day" feels like a clickbait headline that should get out at least once a year. That's 82 people/day!
What I drew looked more like the orange line. But I wasn't thinking per mile, either.
Per mile isn't the relevant measure.
An interesting side note is that the VMT line would shift significantly depending which countries you restrict it to - especially in the last few decades, the improvement is not evenly distributed.
You shouldn't draw the red line. The orange line is the normalized death rate from motorcars.
