What is going to be the next ubiquitous technology that will makes most sci-fi seem outdated in a decade? Recent examples include members of supposedly advanced civilizations lacking capabilities of anyone with a cell phones and armies ignoring obvious uses of drones in warfare.

I also think that certain science fiction is going to be right and almost all other science fiction is going to be wrong with regards to the ability of a government employee with authorization to find the location of any specified citizen in an urban environment. (c.f. China)

(I suppose that depends on whether you think a policy response to de-escalate from having that capability is likely but it's very, very not obvious to me that that capability is something which is a We Would Never Use It Under Any Circumstances. Therefore, it will be routine.)

Interesting. I can see sub-vocalization being the most successful pseudo-BCI mechanism and it is starting to seem obvious that people want non-screen interaction with computers (currently shown mostly by podcasts and people asking Alexa to set timers).
