It’s striking how much better spent time listening to podcasts is relative to time spent on Youtube. I wonder whether that’s a function of my interests, YouTube’s recommendation algorithm, the video form factor, etc.

I'd love to hear podcast recommendations

Got a bunch of them and increasingly I’m outsourcing my discovery to people who are good guests, on the theory that they’re in demand, say yes to higher quality shows, and are probably worth listening to regardless of show quality.

Its the production expectations that go into video vs audio imo

So I think that’s some of it, but why doesn’t anyone relevant to me end up doing the “Hey we have two interesting folks in a room and an iPhone, let’s go” version of video? Because there is a lot of stuff on YouTube which isn’t hyper-optimized for professionalism.

They would be so much better (50%?) if we could play them at 1.5x.

I wonder how much of it relates to the cost to produce a podcast versus a video, and the ease of setting up the infrastructure to produce it. Podcasts feel like a natural conversation, just with the background presence of a microphone. Having to stare at a camera feels rehearsed

I’d also add that, podcasts are usually listened by a genuinely interested audience, whereas YouTube content is easily discoverable by search done by anyone. Speaking to a genuinely interested audience makes guests more relaxed and candid.
