Thinking of writing an essay on how brokerages make money since a) it comes up on HN a lot and the easy answer (commissions) is wrong and b) the revenue mix for different brokerages, even among discount brokerages, varies hugely.

Most people have poor intuition on how financial firms work. Most people and economists also don’t understand macro properly. It’s funny how people ask “how will this startup (eg Robinhood) make money”, but don’t apply the same analysis to large ones!

I suspect the same is true for most insurance companies as well... Lot of money being lost on auto insurance out there.
