One of the thing which drives Japanese fashion spending is the practice of living at one's parents house in one's early twenties, which means a relatively modest salary is essentially all disposable income. Not a choice I'd make, but I had coworkers who spent 50% on clothes/etc.

Holds true for Korea. Avg. marriage age for males is 33. Housing is subsidized by parents for the majority until marriage. Fashion and beauty are major spends because it’s how you compete is a society driven by the Lake Wobegon effect.
