Things I have an extreme amount of aesthetic distaste for: Systems which have an obviously optimal play which civilians are largely unaware of and participants are unable to tell civilians about due to professional guild rules. This is obviously an affront to justice.

this. so much this. this is why I'm terrified when otherwise brilliant
@tqbf argue for unionization of programmers. -
Organization has almost nothing to do with licensure, which I oppose entirely.

I think we lucked out only because the cost of entry dropped so incredibly fast in the late 70s to mid 80s. $100 and a TV and you could learn BASIC. By the time people who are inclined to form guilds got in, it was already too late.

And the sneaking suspicion by successful working programmers that they wouldn't be licensed.

Love this. Imagine having to respect "code reviewer - client privelage"

That attitude also clearly drove the whole open source ethos in the first place, which is arguably what's been pushing the industry (profession?) forward for some time now.

The trade off of course being "sure, I'm a programmer. I know how to code agile kanbans in React" People do not routinely accept their doctor/accountant getting hired based on their ability to do a FizzBuzz equivalent, let alone *not* being able to.

The best thing about programming as a profession is what makes programming not a profession, unfortunately.

I envision an alternate world where every procedure call must first validate that the coder is still licensed and in good standing with the Programmer's Association and shit runs at the speed of wood.

I appreciate your argument, but I speculate that the licensing of finance professionals is more related to fraud prevention than expertise. It sucks they are so weak on tax advice, but you also want to discourage conflicts of interest (and Ponzi schemes).
