I produced a bit of scholarly output in my life, including being published in a legitimate journal. The most useful essay, measuring by citation count in legitimate journals, is an HN comment which I posted on my blog because it was getting long. It spawned a small genre.

If I were to list the ten most important relationships to me careerwise, at least six of them are directly subsequent to writing a shedload online, and the other four are just slightly more indirect.

Patrick, have you ever experienced repercussions for your writing? I often will go to start something, and decide "nah, {this is dumb|i will get laughed at|it's not useful}". I'm pretty sure those are all just cognitive distortions, but its hard to tell with little experience.

Yes, but on balance the ledger is overwhelmingly positive and I should almost certainly write more than I do.
