The best argument for the accredited investor rule is that, in the absence of it, promoters will manufacture companies which are difficult to cost-effectively distinguish from actual businesses but which functionally are not and use them to pick middle class' pockets.

It's peculiar to me that we consider it risky for older adults to invest money they already have in companies, but not risky for teenagers to invest money they do NOT have in colleges that may or may not award them degrees that may or may not generate returns for them.

I would also include it for leverage, and any number or low volume etfs. The etf revolution is great for common names, but products like XIV should have required accredited standards.
