It’s interesting to me that putting a dollar value next to bets triggers people’s association with gambling. Relatively few people consider starting a company to be gambling. Substantially no one considers e.g. writing an essay, despite execution risk and uncertain payoff matrix.

(One of the differences between gambling-as-metaphor and gambling-as-literal is that in a lot of the metaphorical uses you’re allowed and encouraged to alter the future world state, bet, and payoff matrix via many more licit means than most gambling offers.)
