Much of what is written about college admissions assumes selective admissions processes. Most colleges do not have these; they accept anyone minimally qualified. I think the same likely applies to hiring.

Respectfully, I'm uncontroversially right with respect to admissions. There are about 200 universities in the US which admit less than half of their applicant pool; the other 90%+ of universities admit more than half, in many cases substantially all.

Almost everything written about college admissions is written by and for the social class that really, really wants into a subset of those 200, though, so people get the (objectively incorrect) impression that selectivity is the norm.
