Respectfully, I'm uncontroversially right with respect to admissions. There are about 200 universities in the US which admit less than half of their applicant pool; the other 90%+ of universities admit more than half, in many cases substantially all.

The phrase “minimally qualified” is doing a lot of heavy lifting when it comes to hiring. For example, look at the challenges faced by people returning to the workforce after an absence. They’re not all trying to apply for jobs at “elite” companies.

In the "Common App" era this may be half-true, but only because acceptance rates are now vastly different from actual attendance. It still feels like a gross generalization of the phrase "minimally qualified".

When I comes to hiring, that may (when combined with an appropriate focus on truly essential elements) be a wise admission of humility. As long as the pre-hire interview is not the final screening device.
