Haven’t read it, am familiar with the thesis, largely do not agree with the thesis. There’s a larger societal substrate that jobs are embedded in which allows the job to be a source of purpose, and it’s that larger substrate that seems to be the problem (at least in the US).

I’m not sure that goes against the main thesis of the book. I think the author gets some stuff wrong and I would need to know economics a bit better to argue the economic points, but the main point seems to apply to the situation in your original RT quite well
