Many of the students were a big deal in high school and then realize that being valedictorian and say 3rd in state for Illinois on Math Team makes you maybe 20th percentile in your class.

Bottom decile resident here, this is all true. The additional thing that is highly highly highly understated: even the top decile can be counted upon to take the time to listen to fuckups like me. It’s not intelligence, it’s access.
