In UK there is a form for claiming child benefit and tax credits but you only fill it in when number of children being claimed changes, not every year. Most people don’t need to file tax returns as government has the necessary information from this.

I think this falls into the bucket of “Problems the rest of the world has solved, and the US continues to find issues in solving”, though I don’t know if the US is unique in it’s handling of tax credits for children.
