For people with my background it's gone from "Oh, that's unusual" to "where did you get your PhD" to "where did you go to school?" Of the 110 people who started in my high school class, IIRC 6 went to university at the end. I wouldn't draw too many conclusions from that, though
And you imagine the alternatives in that scenario being more "incentive aligned" institutional education paths (learn skills, less academic bloat) or would they be more like abandonment of formal education nearly entirely for the individual pursuit of knowledge and skill?
