There is a genre of articles like that, and the writers and editors of it know what they’re doing, or in the alternative they are sufficiently responsive to the incentives of viral spread that the system knows what it is doing even if the actuators of it do not.

It's called middle class inflation and taxation. These are the ppl lugging around all the cost overhead that is govt. The super rich pay no tax. The poor pay no tax either.

Article is meaningless as well - could talk about hedonic treadmill, human tendency to compare up instead of down, whether they are "average" among neighborhood or not, diminishing returns on wealth or 20 other actually interesting topics that look at happiness && income
