Hey @patio11, what do you think of a big Valley-based internet company asking job candidates in Japan to give their detailed salary breakdown for the past 3 years in a neat XLS form and attach copies of their 3 latest payslips before starting compensation negotiations?

I think that that is neither standard nor customary even in Japan, that I would not do it under any circumstances, and that my answer would be “I am a scrupulous professional and protect my employers’ intellectual property and trade secrets, inclusive of their comp schemes.”

(The above case is extreme but) How would one know where to begin putting together an offer, if not allowed to ask the candidate for past / acceptable compensation?

I guess then the company has to pick a price and see if it gets a deal or counteroffer, a mechanism that the company should be familiar with from every negotiation it has ever had with anyone other than an employee.

But if it's a deal, there's not enough signal for the company to tell if it was the optimal offer from their perspective. Them's the breaks!

The capitalist in me wants to say that skill in execution of business is why one gets paid the big bucks and that if one has a suboptimal outcome in negotiation then one should get better at one’s job rather than trying to get employees to compromise their negotiating position.
