Hey @patio11, what do you think of a big Valley-based internet company asking job candidates in Japan to give their detailed salary breakdown for the past 3 years in a neat XLS form and attach copies of their 3 latest payslips before starting compensation negotiations?

(The above case is extreme but) How would one know where to begin putting together an offer, if not allowed to ask the candidate for past / acceptable compensation?
-
I guess then the company has to pick a price and see if it gets a deal or counteroffer, a mechanism that the company should be familiar with from every negotiation it has ever had with anyone other than an employee.

In my 15 years in Japan I’ve been asked my salary many times but never which such insistence... I’m just ignoring the request right now and next round of interviews is with US management so I’m tempted to ask them what they think of the Japan HR practices

Don’t give a false number but do say you cannot give them the number. It is often proprietary information anyway.

I believe it’s illegal for California companies to ask applicants about prior salaries, even if the employee lives in Japan.https://www.sfgate.com/business/networth/article/New-law-bans-California-employers-from-asking-12274431.php …

Well I’m talking with the Japanese subsidiary so while it’s not technically illegal here, it should be a concern for them to act in ways that would be illegal at their headquarters
