I just “I am not an accountant but...” my Japanese accountants and, without implying that they were *wrong* on the tax return, saved myself $2,000. I am not always a Japanese salaryman, but when I am, I am occasionally pretty good at it.

Salaryman trick: most forms don’t change at all on a year to year basis so if you can print on transparency (or do the equivalent in an image editor) you can diff them very quickly. All the differences are suspicious.

Dang it, one serving of crow: my accountant tells me that while I’ve been right on this line the last five years there was a regulation change. Drats. Well, that’s why we specialize I suppose.
