Having read only the headlines, two reactions: 1) This is so weird to me, having gone to a MIT, where most of my friends went to small town private schools or ISU; my parents were happy for me, but would I think have been equally happy if I'd gone to ISU; why do parents care?

2) I thought everybody knew most private schools were fucked like this? MIT thank goodness doesn't do athletic or legacy preference, but I've been banging on about Harvard's legacy program for years now.

When private college professors say "we teach students how to *THINK*" you should hear them say, in the main, "we teach students how to pass as privileged." Which, I mean, was extremely useful to me, so I don't *exactly* knock it

This is a sentence I could have written in university but didn’t deeply understand for at least a decade later, and if my kids ever go to university, this is going to be far, far more than a dinner table conversation.
