I try not to be too cynical but, well, you sort of lose presumption of innocence when of accused of e.g. racial discrimination when your character witness is titled Vice Provost for Racial Discrimination Programs.

I think the issue here is that the corruption was performed by individuals (who pocketed the proceeds) rather than by the institutions themselves (who would love to pocket said proceeds).

I think the surprising thing is they didn’t even buy in the traditional way: they bought fake scores and fake admissions profiles (something I’d expect more out of the middle class with less to pag and more to be gained). I think everyone realizes the donation based admittance.

So true. In reality, this is not particularly different than legacy x calling legacy y (who happens to be on the Board of Trustees) and mentioning that his son will be applying in the fall..

It's a classic agent problem: some agent of yours (e.g. coach) or third party you had contracted with to make an assessment (test proctor) took a bribe to give you (institution) a biased assessment. Of course you're going to be upset with both people involved in the bribery.
