Lambda School is going from "It wouldn't strictly speaking be *crazy* to use them" to "I can model a thought process which would suggest attending a university over Lambda, but am skeptical" faster than I'd have thought possible.https://twitter.com/Austen/status/1105574664024162305 …

Today is a day I’ve been waiting for for a long time. We’re launching living stipends for Lambda School students. We pay you $2,000/month for 9 months while you attend. You pay back 10% of salary for 5 years, and only when you’re making $50k+. https://lambdaschool.com/blog/announcing-living-stipends/ …

What evidence do you need to see to eliminate that skepticism?

Eliminate skepticism that universities add value? My bet is that I'm enormously biased in their favor; they probably wouldn't have to rigorously prove they were worth the money, even conspicuously trying to educate undergrads effectively would likely be enough.

I went from skeptical about Lambda School to a huge proponent after one conversation with their cofounder. Fortunately the conversation was recorded: https://www.screaminginthecloud.com/episodes/https/episodescastoscom/screaminginthecloud/episode-32-lambda-school-a-new-approach-to-hire-edmp3 …

Soon it will be *crazy* to go to university when you could go to Lambda.

At least in the UK I think the path to mainstream will be gap years - take a year off like everyone does, travel for 3 months, do Lambda for 9. Then if you don't get a job, go to university as planned, if you do, you just saved 3 years of your life.

For somebody like myself that came from a very small town with a school under serious budget constraints and lacking after hours activities I needed the social aspect of a large state university. Living on my own in a just padded enough environment, etc. ...

Going straight to even an average sized city and into a real tech job would have been a lot to take. That is my best argument for universities. As far as the academics/skills, I’d prefer Lambda.

We have that same system in Canada, we called it “income tax” and “low tuition” (though it’s been creeping up

We have the same in the UK, but honestly I think the ROI is a lot higher on Lambda. The government should allow us to invest our subsidy in better schools and grant these new challenger options a level playing field.

I'm at the point where 34 year old me wouldn't change my choice of University, but 18 year old me might pick Lambda over the full tuition scholarship. 9 months instead of 4 years is compelling.
