The delta is partially “Recovered from the dotcom bust” but mostly “Oh hey software are the world and starting wages for technologists are now higher than your anticipated career peak compensation in 2004.” (And I suppose generic inflation, a bit.)

People still believed in "nice stable job at BigCo" in 2004? I'd been at BigCo for 25 years by then, but that was about my 4th job there and I'm now on my 5th, and none of the other BigCos that were around when I started have been especially stable either.
