One thing I keep in mind lately, for negotiation and honestly life in general, is sometimes even the act of explaining yourself— no matter what your tone or words are— signals you don’t think that thing is obvious, or normal, or expected. It’s sometimes better to not explain.

In fact, sometimes people will ask for an explanation just to see if you’ll give one, test how normal/expected you think that thing is. I wouldn’t explain why I need money to survive, I’d look at you like you asked a stupid question. That kind of vibe is what you need sometimes.

A feature about negotiations that I do not love but has been real: sometimes it is tactically advantageous to signal “No, I actually am in your social class.” This sometimes requires measured aggression.

“Why do you want *that much* money?” (Nuance was “that’s clearly unthinkable” by tone of voice/context of conversation; this was not “How did you arrive at that quote?” Response: “That’s a good one.”

Sometimes this also comes as a non-verbal "professional flinch" rather than an actual question or verbalized objection. Just a look/sound of surprise, followed by silence. Being comfortable with that silence rather than "breaking" is very powerful.
