Not enough context given but my first guess was that this was a quantitative data gathering excercise where kids use data that they can easily relate to as opposed to a demonstration of the ills of tech.

The default notification behaviour of these apps is extremely distracting though. I bet most professionals *at those companies* (and others) have by and large turned them all off (if they haven’t deleted the apps).
