I was so skeptical of the value of this prior to seeing eu-ambition in action up close and personal the last couple of years, and think that I finally understand the degree of gravitational force SF has for folks who resonated with this message earlier.

English needs a better translation for 野望. (Yabou, a Japanese word, which is in most dictionaries as ambition / aspiration, but's one of a few ways to say that. If you have the Pokemon theme song memorized: "I want to be the very best, that no one ever was": *that's* yabou.)

One of the interesting comparisons of narrative: in English-language literature, the hero has greatness thrust upon him, and often resists this before relenting. If there's someone who starts in adversity and just wants to achieve mastery, that's probably the bad guy.

Campbell: This concept did not exist in the East. Narrator: It did. Bashō: Japan’s most famous poet reporting for duty from the middle of one of my literal voyages of self-discovery to take the Narrator’s side on this one.

Narrator: Can I tell him? Bashō: Go ahead. Narrator: One of his most famous works is: Do not follow in the footsteps of the wise, but seek what they sought. Bashō: Sounded better in the original. Narrator: It did.
