Question I get fairly frequently: is it still possible to make money in startups or as a creator on the Internet, or has the opportunity passed or been sewed up by AppAmaGooBookSoft or similar? The answer to this: unambiguously, yes, opportunities are changing but *better.*

Do you think about leaving? Or do you think about being somewhere else? Very different things IMHO -- I often think about working at Stripe but I very rarely think about leaving Tarsnap.

Mostly I think about starting software companies, which is sort of an occupational hazard of a) having done that and b) being professionally involved in reducing all the barriers to starting software companies while c) talking to lots of people doing lots of interesting software.

Isn't it better to have employees who think about leaving and choose to stay than employees who see you as the unchangeable default?

The latter are not employees, those are religious devotees. And unless you are Herbalife you don't want those.

I am at my current job _because_ I want to learn enough to leave and start another company. Right now, I'm cynical and out of ideas. But every day I get a little more excited about how much whitespace there is for new products that would help me and my coworkers.

I fully support and agree with that “Everyone pretends we’re here forever” is a pattern that inhibits candor and feedback. My thoughts here https://dimitarsimeonov.com/2018/01/10/from-save-face-to-fearless-face-culture …
