A vendor wants to talk about *literally* what I get paid to do (and wrote and give talks on). How do I politely say that we‘d need to set up a consulting agreement, and what my hourly rate is? Cause I sure as hell ain’t giving him my hard-earned insight for free…

Great advice. I had a client try to lowball my consulting rate by saying “your rates are excessively high for contractors.” I replied “my rates are reasonable considering you need help in a very specialized field and I’m one of the worlds leading experts.” They paid it.

This is a common tactic: “body shop X only charges $200 an hour, why are your rates so high?” You should be confident in your abilities. “Please feel free to contract with body shop X. I guarantee they don’t have a resource that is an expert in this area.”
