A vendor wants to talk about *literally* what I get paid to do (and wrote and give talks on). How do I politely say that we‘d need to set up a consulting agreement, and what my hourly rate is? Cause I sure as hell ain’t giving him my hard-earned insight for free…

(If you’re not hearing “Ugh I want this but I can’t pay that” you are not near the ceiling. Also, if you do hear tjat, negotiate on scope rather than rate. “Can’t do a full week engagement with you for your budget but you get half of what you want for a two day training.”

Great advice. I had a client try to lowball my consulting rate by saying “your rates are excessively high for contractors.” I replied “my rates are reasonable considering you need help in a very specialized field and I’m one of the worlds leading experts.” They paid it.
