Was very interested in this when I had a terrible job; had a spreadsheeting counting down the days until I could exit. FIRE became remarkably less relevant to my interests once I started doing things I enjoyed which seemed to matter to the world.

Likewise. I certainly want "enough" money to live the life I want to lead (which is not a substantial expense - certainly not tens of millions), but I can't not be busy. Sitting on the beach was fun for a week, or two, but I have to be creating something.

+1. concerning myself with FIRE made it pretty difficult to view work with a postitive outlook. I think this is in conflict with the claimed ethos of FIRE is to spend time how you want, but I think most young people esp seem to view it as an escape.
