Interesting payment UX: went to a haircut place in US which wouldn’t let you tip on a CC but instead had a list of Venmo accounts for all the stylists.

“That sounds a little weird.” People’s first guess is “Establishment doesn’t want to pay CC processing fee”, which is not untrue, but the less obvious bit is “They probably have an independent contractor relationship with stylists who ‘rent a chair’ and don’t want funds flow.”

This is a thing. The least risky way from the salon’s perspective is to literally rent access to their facilities; contractor takes all market risk and pays flat rate per day. The slightly more risky way is for salon to pay contractor per cut for fulfillment.

I’m Switzerland with regards the the general topic, but with regards to salons specifically, from this ex-consultant’s perspective, almost every haircut I’ve ever gotten has been by someone who should be classified as an employee but I will bet salons didn’t do that on paper.
