“That sounds a little weird.” People’s first guess is “Establishment doesn’t want to pay CC processing fee”, which is not untrue, but the less obvious bit is “They probably have an independent contractor relationship with stylists who ‘rent a chair’ and don’t want funds flow.”

This is a thing. The least risky way from the salon’s perspective is to literally rent access to their facilities; contractor takes all market risk and pays flat rate per day. The slightly more risky way is for salon to pay contractor per cut for fulfillment.

Even better, some nail salons have Venmo qr codes directly at salon desks!

The place where I get my haircut has a large, locked panel on the wall with an array of named slots and you literally slip cash into the appropriate slot to tip your stylist. (Electronic payments not yet a big thing here.)

I find the idea of tipping for a haircut to be even stranger than tipping for a meal.

Been seeing that a lot. Annoying experience. Stylists want to avoid that 2.5% cut, can’t blame them

I don't want to type a 20 character username off a sheet of paper during checkout. One of the few occasions where cash actually has the better UX.
