As an ex-pro photographer, I can confirm this is absolutely on point. Shoot with cell phone camera, it doesn't matter, just get the lighting right and you are sorted. Also a minor tewak on the EQ in your sound goes a long way.

Proper lighting (brightness, placement, diffusion) results in a good product from any modern camera sensor, incl phones. Good cameras can compensate for dim lights, but nothing fixes poor placement/diffusion.
