Two unfortunate things about the startup community: 1) There is no business too small for commentators to say "That is beneath my notice and therefore I will not disparage it and confidently predict failure." 2) There is no business too large for commentators to stop doing #1.

This may be splitting hairs somewhat, but while this is definitely a feature of HN (sadly), it may not be a feature of the startup community. It may be that the people who make these comments are not and never will be startup founders.

We may have a dichotomy here like that between e.g. athletes and sports fans. In which case chances are slim that things will improve.

I once described it as producer Internet versus consumer Internet, but I am cautiously optimistic that the barriers to building things people want are substantially less durable than the tyranny of height in basketball, and that we can move the culture at the margins.
