Almost all job ads are designed to cause candidates to select out. Strongly consider writing your job ads to maximize the likelihood they select in.

If necessary, tell anyone drafting the ad to replace "Requirements" with "I do not want to hear from stellar candidates who lack any of" and "Nice to haves" with "I only want candidates with a high opinion of themselves or all of..." then replace back right before posting.

I'm not familiar with the terms "select out" and "select in". Can you explain what they mean?

Sure. If I read an ad, and it says "Must be located in San Francisco", and this causes me to not apply, I have selected out. If I read an ad, and your mission is inspiring, and I immediately apply, I have selected in.

Gem from @patio11 - Remember job seekers, the person writing the job post most likely can’t say “yes” to you. Don’t say “no” to yourself.https://twitter.com/patio11/status/1089719901944598528 …

Thoughts as to why? My guess: results in less work for recruiters to screen candidates and then sell hiring managers on them

I think a bit of that, a bit of "This is how we've always done things", a bit of job descriptions being many peoples' interest but nobody's responsibility ("I think Legal said we have to foo the bar for liability concerns?"), and a bit of pervasive lack of competence in industry.

Important ☝️ tweet up here with the labor market so tight. It’s not 1995, this is no longer how job ads are written. Aaand it’s also just dumb, your copy is the interface between the company and those who may fit it’s vacancies, don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater.

Especially the ones requiring college degrees drive me absolutely nuts. It’s 2019. You need a degree to perform surgery on people, but that’s about it.

Important to keep in mind for interviews too. A good interview will highlight someone’s talents to find the right opportunity.

This! ⬆️ For all companies complaining about "talent shortages" and "lack of diversity in candidates", it is almost certainly your fault. Make it easy for good candidates to apply. Stop making it so only those who took the path most travelled, or the over-confident, can apply.

Know that the over-confident statistical means abled cishet white men from a relatively wealthy background. If your job ads have overly burdensome and in fact not really required "requirements" lists, you have made a decision to positively discriminate for that demographic.
