I don't think this is accurate; I swept all my Google accounts for SMS options and deactivated them all.

We do users a disservice when we say things like "get a yubikey" and fail to disclose the tradeoffs (the complexity, problems, and risks introduced). I'll need to carry it everywhere yet, unlike phone-based apps, I can't protect it with a pin and can't replace it when I lose it.

Google offers me a list of emergency keys. I keep them in a safe place (safe, mom's freezer, passport page when overseas) and can deactivate them one-by-one if compromised. Yubikey doesn't do that?

Banks and Singpass (login for all government stuff here) give you physical 2FA tokens, but then at login let you choose to use the physical or have OTP sent to you by SMS. No, you can't disable the SMS option. No, their helpdesks can't comprehend why you might even want to do so.
