Cool UX from Japan: a popular restaurant with no reservations took our number to call us when we’re ready and printed a receipt with a QR code for real time updates on our place in line

There’s an argument for “Give me your number and I’ll text you the tracking URL instantly” but requiring users to remember a URL or do data entry is probably less efficient than asking a computer to do both.

I believe the primary impetus for QR code adoption in Japan was to avoid having customers have to exactly reproduce long strings of alphanumeric characters, yes.

it seems to me it never took off in the US b/c Apple only recently added native support for QR codes

i recently went to a dive bar where you get a qr code to place all your orders. (qr -> website -> order beer -> server brings it). it was pretty wild.

I’m not up to speed with mobile state of the art, but this would probably work even better with a quick NFC transmission of the URL. Wonder if phones have a way of doing that without custom apps...

Pretty sure they’ve been doing this in China for a while now over wechat, and I’ve seen this in the USA too over the last couple years over SMS from tech-forward SF to even a place in my hometown of Cleveland - but no lie, it’s a great idea nonetheless.
