Cool UX from Japan: a popular restaurant with no reservations took our number to call us when we’re ready and printed a receipt with a QR code for real time updates on our place in line

I suppose reading a QR code is not typically considered a web primitive but we’ve been doing it here since late 90s so.

I once wrote a mental health tool where the entire interface was just sms commands, so I didn't have to learn app dev It really helped me for a long time.

ha, last time I waited in line at the Din Tai Fung in Pasadena the "check your place in line" refused to let you see your place unless you downloaded the app. i refused on principle

That's awesome! Have you ever been to those restaurants where you scan the QR code on the table, and in WeChat an app pops up that lets you view the menu, order, and pay without actually needing someone to come over or wait in line at the counter?

Yup, and not only will no one install that app, but *any* app anymore. In hindsight, the homescreen is just a semi-curatable web portal, and once a year a new service (which happens to be in the form of an app) comes along that garners meaningful downloads.
